I thought it would be interesting to write
some frequently asked questions I have been asked over the years.
Some are very good, some humorous but, all are actual questions.
Q: I sent you an application
this morning, when do I go to work? A: It usually
takes a minimum of 24-48 hours to to process your application. We
check references and applications with good phone numbers process
much faster. Q: I know I've called 3
times today but, the kids are hungry and I need to go to work
now! A: I will update your availability only once a
week. I wish I could hire everyone who needs a job and is willing to
work but, I can't. Job openings are filled using information I
can verify. Verify is the key word here. I can make my mom look like
a Master Electrician on paper. All things equal, most
recent available electricians will get first
call. Q: I filled out an application two weeks ago
and I still haven't been hired, what's up with
that? A: Any number of things can affect that.
Sometimes I need a few electricians and get a whole lot of
applications. Or, I might need need someone with a different skill
level. All things being equal it can be luck of the draw (missed
phone call, etc). This does not mean you are not being considered. I
don't intend to mislead anyone. I will keep your info and I do hire
a lot of electricians. I recommend calling in once every week or two
while you are out of work to update your availability. Anyone in our
office can do this with a click of a button, however, we will only
make one availability entry per week. Rest assured we
will call if you match the qualifications we require for a job. I
have called electricians that have been on the database for years
and when I call them, they are working. On the other side, when they
called, I had no openings...and then the right job came up at
the right time and we hooked up. Q:
I just got laid off, when do I get my
bonus? A: Your bonus will be included in your final
check but, do give me a call when you are finished. This not only
allows me to make sure all your info is updated and to thank you for
a job well done. It also helps me do a better job keeping you
working. Q: I just quit, when do I get my
bonus? A: Duh.....(remember the
"attendance" part?) Q: I just got fired, do I
still get my bonus? A: See previous
answer Q: I just got laid off, when
do I get my bonus? (you really know you were just
fired) A: Did you really think I wouldn't find out?
See previous answer Q: I worked for
you 2 years ago for 4 months an now I have worked for you on this
job for two months. How does this affect my paid
holidays? A: You are now eligible for paid
holidays. Due to the nature of our business this is not unusual.
After you have accrued 6 months time in service at SCC, you will be
paid 6 holidays a year and while currently working with us and have
at least 40 consecutive hours on your current job assignment (ya got
to work a week). Holidays are: Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day,
Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Same goes for vacations
but, the time in service is 12 months even if it is over many years.
We will pay you one week's pay. Q:
Why do you pay a bonus instead of an extra dollar an
hour? A: If you do everything you can to make sure
we finish a job on time and on budget you deserve a bonus. If you
didn't finish the job I figure you are a full grown adult and while
I can't make your choices in life I can, at least, reward good
behavior. I love to give bonus checks...the bigger the
better! Q: I was hired permanently with one of your
customers 2 years ago and just got laid off. Can I get back on your
available list? A: You bet. While you
are not required to accept an offer to take a permanent position
with one of our customers, it says a lot about you. Not all
companies will have enough work going on to make you such an offer
but, sooner or later most of the best employees will get an
offer. Q: I really can't take the
the job you are offering me right now. Will this affect my future
opportunities with your company? A: No. I like
folks who are straight up with me. You can turn down a job for any
reason. My job is to find the right person for the job. If you can't
go, you can't go. Q: Sorry I didn't
show up to the last job you sent me to. I was going to call but
I forgot. Do you have any other jobs? A: This
answer left blank on purpose! Q: Can
I get an advance? A: The #1 Rule is don't try my
patience. My policy is I will give any new employee one advance
because I know when you first start money can be tight,
especially if you are on a job away from home. After that it's on a
case-by-case basis. If in doubt refer to the #1 Rule. I do reserve
the right to say "no". Money will be advanced only from hours worked
allowing for required deductions (taxes, etc.). I will not,
under any circumstances, "loan" money on future earnings. Any
advance will be deducted from your next paycheck. I believe this is
as liberal a policy as any employer I ever worked for and I will try
to keep it this way as long as its not abused. Any expense incurred
like Western Union charges will be charged to
you. Q: I am a pipe fitter and I'm
looking for work, ya got any jobs? A: Sorry, we are
very specialized. By only dealing with one trade, we feel we can do
a much better job. I have been in construction all my adult
life and do know the difference between a plumber and a pipe fitter.
I am an electrician by trade and in my heart. Q:
My paycheck didn't come in today's mail, how
come? A: We mail out pay stubs and pay checks every
Wednesday. The US Postal Service usually does a decent job but, even
they can't control weather, vehicle breakdowns and the other things
that can lead to a delay in receiving mail. Direct deposit is the
only way to go, I use it myself. Every time your pay stub arrives on
Saturday or Monday you will be glad you signed up for direct deposit
pay.
